Decoder Sheriff — Homework Booklet

Five pages, one for each day of the week. Print double-sided on A4 or Letter paper. Each page takes about 10 minutes for a 6-year-old.

The Hat Shop Hunt

Bonnie loves the hat shop! Circle every word that ends in -at. Cross out the words that don't belong.

hat cat dog bat mat cup rat sat pig fat red pat

Now your turn:

Write 3 more -at words you know:

💬 Grown-up note: Ask your child to read each word aloud. Praise them for noticing the same ending sound!

Magic-e Twins

When you add a magic e to the end, the vowel says its own name! Draw a line to match each short word with its long-vowel twin.

hat
cap
rid
cub
not
tub
ride
tube
hate
cube
cape
note

Read aloud:

Add an e, can't you see?  Short vowel runs away from me!

💬 Grown-up note: Say the short word, then the long word. Notice how the vowel changes its sound but the consonants stay the same.

💬 Grown-up note: Encourage invented spelling — don't correct yet. The goal is segmenting sounds, not perfect spelling.
